Rick Smith Brings Innovation to the Correctional Facilities Industry

If you’re at all curious about Richard (Rick) A. Smith, he is the CEO and President of Securus Technologies, a leading provider of civil and criminal justice technology solutions. Smith joined Securus in 2008, serving as the company’s Director, before assuming the role of CEO and President. Prior to joining Securus Technologies, Smith enjoyed an illustrious career in the telecommunications industry. According to Bloomberg.com, Richard Smith attended the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he earned an Associate of Applied Science degree; from there, he attended the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. Additionally, Smith attended the University of New York at Brockport, where he earned a Masters in Mathematics, and lastly, he attended the University of Rochester’s Simon School, where he received a degree in Business Administration.

Smith’s career experience leading up to his role with Securus, is as equally impressive as his educational background; Smith began his career with Global Crossing (formerly Frontier Corp) in 1972, holding a variety of positions with the telecommunications company. While with Global Crossing, Rick Smith held the following positions: Chief Information Officer, Network Plant Operations Director, Vice President of Midwest Telephone Operations, Director of Business Development, Vice President of Financial Management, and lastly, President of Information Technologies, before severing ties with the company in 1998, to pursue other endeavors.

Shortly after leaving Global Crossing, Smith joined Eschelon Telecom, a holding company for telecommunications businesses; he began his career as the company’s COO (Chief Operating Officer) in 1999 and maintained that role until July 2003. In August of 2003, Smith served as the company’s CEO, maintaining that position until 2007, and in 2008, he was named President of Eschelon Telecom. Currently, Smith is the CEO and President of Securus, a business providing telecommunication solutions to upwards of 3000 law enforcement, correction agencies, and public safety agencies. Additionally, Securus provides communication solutions to approximately 1.2 million inmates throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
